People often use “fireproof safe” and “burglar-proof safe” as if they meant the same thing. They protect against different threats, and the right choice depends on what you store.
What a fire-resistant safe does
A fire-resistant safe is built to slow down heat transfer to the inside, giving paper, cash and valuables a better chance of surviving a fire nearby. It matters most for:
- Property papers, legal and business documents
- Cash and cheque books
- Records that cannot be recreated
Be realistic: no safe is completely fireproof in every situation. The intensity and duration of a fire, and where the safe is placed, all make a difference.
What a burglar-resistant safe does
A burglar-resistant safe is designed to resist forced opening and removal. What matters most:
- Steel thickness, especially the door plate
- Weight, so it cannot simply be carried away
- Locking system, ideally with dual control
- Installation, so it is fixed in position
It matters most for jewellery, cash-heavy businesses, gold loan offices and anywhere a thief may target the safe itself.
Side-by-side
| Fire-resistant | Burglar-resistant | |
|---|---|---|
| Main threat | Heat and fire | Forced entry and theft |
| Key features | Fire-resistant construction | Thick steel, weight, locks |
| Best for | Documents, cash, records | Jewellery, cash, gold |
Why most buyers need both
Most homes and businesses store documents and valuables together. That is why every Maa Vihat safe combines fire-resistant construction with a 10 mm steel door plate, a 3.15 mm steel body plate, and a choice of combination, dial, electronic password or computer key locks.
Choosing by use
- Home: a compact heavy locker such as the MV-29 or MV-36.

Frequently asked questions
Is a fireproof safe also burglar-proof?
Not necessarily. Fire resistance depends on insulation and construction, while burglary resistance depends on steel thickness, weight and locks. Choose a safe that addresses both if you store cash, jewellery and documents together.
Are any safes completely fireproof?
No safe is fireproof in every fire. Fire-resistant safes are built to slow heat reaching the contents. Placement and the size of the fire also matter.
