Safe sizes explained: litres, dimensions and what actually fits

Safe sizes are usually quoted in litres, but what you really need to know is the inside dimensions (will it fit my things?), the outside dimensions (will it fit my room and doorway?), and the weight (can the floor and route handle it?).

“DD” means double door.

How to measure before you buy

  1. Measure the spot. Height, width and depth, plus room to swing the door open fully.
  2. Measure the route. The narrowest doorway, corridor turn, staircase and lift on the way in.
  3. Check the floor. Heavier safes on upper floors need planning. Tell us the floor level.
  4. Measure your contents. Jewellery boxes, trays and files take more room than expected.

Single door or double door?

Double-door models (MV-48DD, MV-60DD, MV-72DD) are wider and open fully to show the whole interior. Jewellers and branches that move trays in and out often prefer them. Single-door models suit narrower spaces.

Frequently asked questions

What does safe capacity in litres mean?

It is the usable internal volume. 1 litre is 1,000 cubic centimetres. For example, inside dimensions of 21 × 14 × 11 inches work out to roughly 50 litres.

Why is the outside of a safe so much bigger than the inside?

The walls and door are made of thick steel with fire-resistant construction, and the door carries the locking mechanism. A strong safe always gives up some outside space for protection.
